How to Test a Workflow Before Activating

Test your MONDAi automation workflow with a real contact before going live. Confirm triggers fire, emails send correctly, and actions complete in the right order.

An untested workflow that fires on real contacts can send the wrong message at the wrong time, apply incorrect tags, or grant access to the wrong product. Testing with a single controlled contact first takes five minutes and prevents all of that.

Steps

  1. Create a test contact

Use your own email. Name it clearly: "TEST — [your name]".

  2. Activate the workflow

  3. Manually trigger the workflow for your test contact

Go to the contact record. In Actions, select Add to Workflow. Or apply the tag that fires the trigger.

  4. Monitor in real time

Go to the workflow and open the Active Contacts or History view to see your contact moving through steps.

  5. Check each output

Email arrives in inbox (not spam). SMS arrives on test number. Tags applied correctly. Wait steps set to correct duration.

  6. If anything is wrong

Pause, fix, remove test contact, retest from the beginning.

  7. Clean up

Delete the test contact record or remove all applied tags.

Testing Checklist

  • Trigger fires for the intended action
  • Email 1 arrives in inbox with correct subject and content
  • Wait steps are set to the correct duration
  • Tags applied match the plan
  • Conditional branches route correctly
  • Final action completes as expected
Common mistakes
  • Skipping the test entirely — the most common and most damaging workflow mistake.
  • Not shortening Wait steps during testing — temporarily set to minutes, not days.
  • Not checking spam folder for test emails.
  • Forgetting to clean up test contact data.
