Warning
Important
Always state the post-trial price clearly on your checkout page. Hidden charges after a free trial generate chargebacks regardless of your refund policy.
A free trial lowers the decision barrier. Instead of committing to a monthly charge immediately, a prospect can experience the program first. MONDAi handles the trial period, conversion to paid, and automatic cancellation if they choose not to continue.
Steps
Open the subscription product
Go to Commerce → Products and open the product with a subscription pricing option.
Enable the trial period
Click the subscription pricing option to edit it. Find Trial Period, toggle it on, and enter the number of trial days (7, 14, or 30 days are common).
Configure card collection
Most free trials require a card on file at signup. The card is not charged during the trial. Confirm the checkout flow collects card details upfront.
Update checkout messaging
The checkout page must clearly state: trial duration, what they access during the trial, post-trial price, and how to cancel.
Test the full flow
Complete a test signup using Stripe's test mode. Verify trial is applied, card saved without charge, access granted immediately, and billing schedule is correct in Stripe.
- Hiding the post-trial price. Surprise charges generate chargebacks and damage your Stripe account. State the price clearly.
- No pre-trial-end reminder. Send an email 2-3 days before the trial ends. It serves the member and improves conversion.
- Free trial on high-touch offers. If your program requires significant time from you from day one, consider a low-cost intro offer instead.
